Where to Hunt for Strawberries in Moore County

A Quick Strawberry Season Update!

As we’ve been making our rounds this season, we found out that U-Pick is a bit limited this year due to a pesky fungus that affected some of the crops. We stopped by a few local favorites—including White Hill and Karefree—and learned that only White Hill and Old Carthage (call Harvey at 919-353-0179 ahead of time!) are offering U-Pick strawberries this season.

BUT! Don’t worry—all the farms still have plenty of fresh strawberries available for purchase, so you can still bring home that sweet berry goodness even if you’re not picking them yourself.

So if U-Pick is a must on your spring bucket list, head to White Hill or Old Carthage. Otherwise, there are still tons of great spots to support local and grab some delicious strawberries for snacking, baking, or freezing for later.

If you’re looking outside of Moore, you can always head to Gross Farms in Lee County for a full-day picking experience! 🍓✨

White Hill Farms

📍Location: 5020 S Plank Rd, Cameron, NC 28326

Within a quick 20–25 minute drive from downtown Southern Pines lies a sprawling farm, ripe with fresh produce, ice cream, local artisanal goods, and above all—strawberries! We ventured out here to pack some baskets for homemade strawberry jam and weren’t disappointed by the results. The fields were abundant, easily accessible from the parking lot and market store, and will be continuously rotated with farm-fresh produce.

Their latest update as of April 8, 2025: The rain has washed away the pollen and the sun is out! Our Pick Your Own field is OPEN and Pre Picked is available in store! Come and see us!

Olde Carthage Farm

📍Location: 2270 US-15, Carthage, NC 28327

The only fully organic U-Pick destination in the area, this little hidden gem is lush with family-friendly picking opportunities. But don’t expect to just drop by—this isn’t your typical come-and-go farm.

To pick, it’s best to call Harvey at 919-353-0179 and check availability. In mid-April, the fields need a few days to regrow between picking sessions, and harvest hours are typically from 8:30–10:30 AM on open days.

You can also follow their Facebook page for updates or reach out to Harvey directly to join. Beyond strawberries, they offer:

  • Blueberry picking in June

  • A butterfly program and kids’ series

  • Grapes (August–September)

  • Summer flower picking

It’s a sweet spot worth planning around.

Their latest update as of April 7: We will open tomorrow morning at 8:30 for strawberry picking. Tomorrow will be a small picking as the berries are just waking up from their winter nap. We are hearing from a large number of excited strawberry fans but I am afraid we will have far more strawberry customers than we will have strawberries. We will open every three to five days as the berries ripen. As the weather warms and the season progresses the volume of strawberries will increase. Please remember that no matter how excited we are to pick those first strawberries of spring we can’t rush nature. We will ask for your patience as the early season is especially difficult to predict and plan picking schedules. See you in the field this season even if not tomorrow.

Why do we love this place?

  • Convenient and personal

  • Organic produce

  • Easily walkable fields with great landscaping

  • Local produce, select canned/preserved goods, and gifts

Karefree Produce

📍Location: 4680 US-15, Carthage, NC 28327

Facebook | Instagram | Email: karefreefarms.karen@yahoo.com | Phone: 910-947-3825

Honestly, its name sums it up. Karefree is such a relaxing, laid-back spot—no surprise it’s been one of our favorites year after year. While they’re not offering U-Pick strawberries this season, they’re still open and fully stocked for pick-up, so you can swing by and grab some fresh berries (and all your other local favorites)!

The owner is incredibly sweet and always happy to chat or answer questions. They’ve got big dreams for growing into more of an agro-tourism destination, and after one visit, you'll definitely want to be part of the journey. Current hours are 9 AM - 5 PM, Wednesday through Saturday!

Why do we love this place?

  • Easy and convenient commute

  • Extremely family-friendly staff and facility—including bathrooms, benches and tables, and a kids play area with a great view

  • Tons of local produce, meats, jams and jellies, candy, and ice cream—homemade popsicles for the kids too!

Highlander Farm

📍Location: 5784 NC-22, Carthage, NC 28327

Facebook | Instagram | Website: highlandersfarmnc.com | Phone: (910) 947-5831

It sounds like they’ll be opening around April 16–17, and we’ll share more once hours are confirmed.

We all know Highlander for their Christmas lights and late summer peaches, but their strawberries usually mark the start of the season. This year, it looks like there won’t be U-Pick strawberries—but you can still stop by and grab fresh berries to-go. Don’t worry, U-Pick is still in the cards for blueberries in June, and other summer produce depending on the season.

Why we love this spot:
– Quick and easy drive from the Pines
– Smaller scale = easy with little ones
– Local produce, homemade ice cream, and a few pantry staples like canned goods

Good to Know:
– Rain may impact hours, so check their socials
– You can drive through if you don’t want to get out
– Buckets are provided for U-Pick when in season

Upcoming U-Pick: Blueberries in June, then peaches, blackberries, and more depending on how the season goes!
