Amor Ciego

A hidden gem, diamond in the rough, or whatever saying you can appreciate to denote a little-known secret. This coffee shop has the BEST espresso in town, hands down. It’s strong and fragrant, with no fuss or frivolities. It makes for a quick stop when wandering downtown Southern Pines or a good starting point for a day of shopping. Occasionally I’ve arrived in time for some house-made pastries, which are delicious but typically scooped up rather fast by their cult-following consumers.

Nitty-Gritty Kid Specs –

  • Because of the limited stroller accessibility and smaller bathroom size, I wouldn't classify this spot as explicitly child-friendly, although it does cater to families! While many patrons would likely be happy to assist with maneuvering your stroller through the South door, you might prefer to leave it outside for convenience.

  • Extremely walkable location in downtown Southern Pines

  • There is a small bathroom off the main dining area, but not exactly easy to use for toddlers/small kids and there is no changing table available.

  • Kids snacks and all-natural juices are available

  • No allergen-friendly food options

Swank

Address: 232 NW Broad St, Southern Pines, NC 28387

The Coffee Prince/Princess of Southern Pines — this coffee shop is seen as the neighborhood go-to. It was the first coffee shop I visited when moving to the area as we set off exploring downtown. Its ambiance is ‘local’ with its artisan-made décor, local gifts for purchase, and snacks made from local downtown businesses (including Pinescones!). Their menu has its staples, but they frequently rotate and introduce new flavors seasonally as well. They also specialize in smoothies and loaded teas for the non-coffee drinker.

Nitty-Gritty Kid Specs –

  • Extremely walkable location in downtown Southern Pines, just a few blocks from the downtown playground

  • There is a decent-sized bathroom in the back of the shop that accommodates kids. There is no changing table, but space to make it work if needed.

  • Though sort of tight inside near the register, you could bring a stroller in if needed

  • Does not serve food officially, but carries several local business pastries/snacks as mentioned — including some gluten-free (GF), and dairy-free (DF) options.

  • Several non-caffeinated beverage options including smoothies for the kids.

Bonus: Swank hosts loads of local events. Perfect for the young adult or parents-night-out. During the holidays it’s also a great stop for a kid's hot chocolate during all the downtown Southern Pines events!

Maisonette

Address: 290 SW Broad St Unit C, Southern Pines, NC 28387

While not officially open, I had the privilege of visiting during a pop-up-style soft opening. This place will become a star of downtown Southern Pines, especially during those family morning summer days ahead. Partnered with other local moms and pop-up style businesses, Maisonette has such promise to be a one-stop-shop for a Pines Mama. Delicious coffee and homemade, unique syrups create a novel coffee shop experience. What I love most of all is the child-friendly vibes, including planned activity stations and areas purely for the kids (like a homemade coffee bar Montessori style complete with an espresso machine and frother — swoon!!).

The exact layout is yet to be seen, but I can see the vision and know it’ll be extremely thought out and useful to the mamas.

Nitty-Gritty Kid Specs –

  • Super walkable downtown Southern Pines location

  • Stroller-friendly access through the main entrance

  • Bathrooms are toddler/young child-friendly, but no changing table

  • Kids snacks are available (juice, baked goods, small snacks)

  • Not allergen-friendly (minimal DF, GF, or Vegan options)

  • Street parking only

The Java Bean Roasting Co.

Address: 410 SW Broad St, Southern Pines, NC 28387

I adore this place for its simplicity. It offers straightforward coffee (cash only!) served in an incredibly cozy venue, a charming little house tucked just off the road. It truly feels like your home-away-from-home. They make a lot of their own house syrups and always have a few individually wrapped baked goods for the grab-and-go morning. They rotate some house-roasted drip coffee flavors too. Typically, I meet friends, including other moms, here because it’s never overly crowded. It is also one of the few coffee shops that has outdoor seating — which we all know is a beautiful thing with exploring toddlers.

Nitty-Gritty Kid Specs –

  • Extremely walkable location in downtown Southern Pines – a few blocks walk to the downtown playground

  • There is a small bathroom located off the small seating area; No changing table, but a lowered sink for toddlers.

  • They have a small collection of kids’ books in the sitting area alongside some comfy couches — which helps my toddler unload for a few minutes while I get my order together.

  • No allergen-friendly food options

Frankies Southern Grinds

Address: 1120 Old US Hwy 1, Southern Pines, NC 28387

This place is one of those wonderful local places that melt your heart. It has character and beauty without the frills. Long-time owners have built a ‘locals’ vibe with their years of business yet they seemingly know how to engage with the newcomers as well. This shop is 100% military family owned and operated and they know their coffee flavors. The signature drinks are fantastic and unique. The atmosphere is totally child-friendly and they even have a corner with toys for the young ones!

Nitty-Gritty Kid Specs –

  • Not necessarily walkable, as it’s off a main road. It’s slightly passed Red’s Corner, so a short drive to downtown (mere blocks away)

  • Not stroller-friendly — stairs are the only form of access. However, the inside is open and easily gives way to car seats and carriers

  • Tons of snacks, even for toddlers, as well as Italian sodas and other non-caffeinated beverages too

  • The bathroom is toddler/young child-friendly

  • Sole outdoor seating on the front porch with kids' chairs available
