A morning in the life of a southern pines toddler

When you’re a mom, your day inevitably starts before you want it to. Whether it’s to get things done, hit the gym, or most likely, cater to a child who never seems to sleep in, the routine begins. You pull on your “motherhood pants” and start the morning shuffle.

Here in Moore County, your days can be anything but boring if you’re ready for it. Moms rejoice—here is a day in the life of a SoPi Moco Mom!

After dropping the littles off at school (if they hit that sweet spot), or maybe they haven’t, and you finally got them strapped in the car seat as you close your door to walk to the driver's seat in solitude, it’s time to take a breath, enjoy that fresh Carolina air (though humid with this Carolina heat!), and game-plan the day.

Mom or not, we all know this starts with a cup of Joe.

So, we head over to Amor Ciego in downtown Southern Pines (SP). Parking is a breeze as these small-town mornings are beautiful and slow. At Amor, you’re greeted by some of the best espresso in town and cult-worthy baked goods made fresh every morning. There’s something for everyone—maybe even a simple vanilla steamer for the toddler trying to climb the table next to you while you wait for your morning lifeblood?

Next, it’s time for a playdate at Downtown Park, which is practically across the street. Less than two blocks away, this fenced-in, baby- to big-kid-friendly playground boasts not only guaranteed fun for the littles but shade for you! Our favorite part is the giant sandbox, where there’s almost always another child looking for a scooping buddy or a mom taking a break to enjoy her coffee too!

As we all know, that Carolina heat is NO JOKE, and by 10 a.m., it’s time to find respite at the Southern Pines Library. If a brilliantly curated selection of books for the whole family isn’t enough, one of their storytimes or drop-in play sessions definitely is. Check their website or Instagram for a full program list, as almost every day, this team of librarians and community members has something planned! Our personal favorite is the 10 a.m. “Learn and Play,” where families can drop in to let their children play with a variety of toys and activities while you connect with other Moco Moms too!

After a morning of play and shenanigans, it’s time to feed those little (and grown-up!) bellies. Downtown SP is stuffed to the brim with great local flavors and eats, but maybe our favorite on a summer day is the town institution, the Ice Cream Parlor. It’s quick and delicious with a full menu of options (even some that are allergy-friendly). Of course, the cherry on top (pun intended!) is the homemade ice cream.

Other options we love are Sweet Basil and Betsy’s Crepes!

Maybe it’s nap time, and if it is, kick those sandals off and grab a snack after you finally wrangle the kids to sleep. Maybe binge a new series like “Full Swing,” which features Moore County in every episode?

If you’re not fully ready to end your day, then it may be time to cool off in the air conditioning with local artisans and shops. Why not consider making a fresh flower bouquet at Thistle and Moon? Or maybe peruse Belli Bambini for that perfect kids' holiday outfit?

Regardless of your go-to exploring ideas and rhythms, Southern Pines truly is a hole-in-one for the entire family.
